Feb. 25, 2008 Welcome to the 7th and 8th grade Language Arts and Washington State History classes. In our seventh grade Language Arts class we are working on our timesheets, which should be read at home for approximately 60 minutes per week. Students should be taking book notes on these books. Many students are coming to school with the timesheet filled out, but then when I check to see if they have taken book notes for their total book report pages, the numbers don’t match up. If you have not seen your child reading at home and filling out timesheets and book notes, please take a moment to ask your child to show you these items. We are now working on direct and indirect objects, and our usual daily oral language journals (DOL). We have started writing again and will be doing some interviewing. This will culminate in a paragraph about someone else in the classroom. We are working on topic sentences and great concluding sentences. We continue to work on formation of letters and legibility. We are starting Vocabulary 14 lesson this week. Timesheets are due March 3 and booknotes are due March 4. In eighth grade we are working on our Language Arts Packet (LAP) and are now finishing up page 36. We are studying about direct and indirect objects plus subordinate and independent clauses. Students in grade 7 and 8 are starting Vocabulary Lesson 14 this week. We continue to work on neatness and legibility of cursive writing. Assignments that I cannot read will be marked as incorrect. Students need to put more effort into this!!! Thanks to those students who continue to write legibly. It makes my job a lot easier. We have started also on Vocabulary Lesson 14 today. We will continue to be reading at home for our timesheets from Feb. 18 to Feb. 25 for a total of 60 minutes minimum per week. Of course your child may read more pages for extra credit. Last trimester we had 2 people in our class read over 5,000 pages each and one student with over 6,000 pages. WOW!! What enthusiasm for reading!! In Washington State History wel are already on Chapter 2, which is the beginning of the contribution made by our Native Americans. This class will count for an exemption at North Mason. If your child earns a B average for the 1st, 2nd , and the 3rd trimester they will not have to take this class again. Those students who do not earn a B will have to take it again at the high school before graduating. It will pay to work hard so you get to take an elective at the high school instead of repeating this class. We are working on each study guide in a group format. Each student will be a captain at some point; many will be captains more than one time. Captains are in charge of keeping their members working, accomplishing questions which are assigned by the captain, reviewing material and sharing their found information with the rest of the group. We will be passing out the information for the first project which will be an art project with an oral presentation. Students need to start as soon as possible to be ready to share their project in front of the room in March. All projects will be assigned a specific due date. This date will be the date your child will show his/her project. If your child is in Study Skills, remember that their grade is based on their completing work and on their citizenship in class. Students who take advantage of this class usually complete 2 assignments or more per class and can earn an A. For my special Reading/Writing class, we continue to work on comprehension strategies and we write, write, write for practice. Many times we write and then read out loud what we have written. We are currently reading a book called the Seventeenth Swap. If your child is in this class have him/her tell you about Eric Green, our main character. We continue to read SRA stories independently. This helps students with comprehension and vocabulary. We are focusing on topic sentences and staying on the topic.
Thanks for looking, Mrs. Merifield Visitors
